MSK Collagen

There are more than 28 types of collagen in the body. MSK Collagen is designed specifically to support healthy connective tissue and joint mobility, and promote a natural response to modulate and down-regulate inflammation.

It contains two bioactive patented collagen peptides, FORTIGEL® and TENDOFORTE®, derived from a process involving the hydrolysis of type I collagen. These ingredients have been shown in clinical studies to boost anabolic processes in connective tissues and provide building blocks to support joint function and promote tendon and ligament strength.*

In 16 human clinical trials, FORTIGEL® demonstrated positive effects for joint health among 2800 human subjects. Study subjects reported increased joint mobility and improved radiographic markers of cartilage health. (1,2)

What is collagen?

Collagen is a protein in the body of all mammals – including us – found in the tissues of our skin, cartilage, bones, ligaments, tendons, and blood vessel walls.

It provides the essential elasticity in the tissues of your body so that you remain, well, more elastic as you age.

More fun facts about collagen:

  • There are 28 types (if we include all subtypes) in the human body
  • Makes up 30% of the protein in your body (Type 1 and 2 make up 90%)
  • Collagen content is in our peak in our late 20s
  • Begins to decline 1-2% per year after age 30
  • 50% is going, going, gone by age 60!
  • Food sources: Eggs/eggshell membrane, chicken, fish, beef

What types of collagen are required to target optimal musculoskeletal (MSK? health?):

  • Type 1 –Bone, Tendons, Ligaments
  • Type 2 –Joint Cartilage, Intervertebral Discs
  • Type 9 –Cartilage
  • Type 12 –Tendons, Ligaments

Adequate amounts of type 1 and 2 influence what is happening at the cellular level in joint, ligament and tendon tissue.

The cell building blocks of your joints:

  • Chondrocytes are the cell building blocks of cartilage
  • Tenocytes and fibroblasts are the cell building block of tendons and ligament

If you have the right type and amount of collagen, you still need to have the right form that the body can actually digest and deliver to the targets of interest.

Hydrolyzed collagen (or what you may see as collagen hydrolysate, or bioactive collagen peptides) means it is broken down into smaller particle sizes that are easier for your body to process and digest.

Studies show that this form of collagen can actually be utilized by the body, and is clinically effective to reduce pain and stiffness associated with knee osteoarthritis. 1

FORTIGEL® and TENDOFORTE®, are research-backed bioactive collagen peptides derived from a patented process involving the hydrolysis of type I collagen. This type of peptide product has been shown to boost the anabolic processes in MSK connective tissues and provide building blocks for all collagen in the body.

In 16 human clinical trials, FORTIGEL® demonstrated positive effects for joint health among 2800 human subjects.2,3 (It’s great when it works for rats, but better when we can see the results in humans!)

The subjects reported increased joint mobility and improved radiographic markers of cartilage health.

Translation:

01. They reported feeling less stiff and painful

02. Their x-rays showed improvements

This product also contains two powerful natural anti-inflammatory compounds shown in clinical studies to be just as potent as 500mg of the NSAID (non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medication) naproxen!

In the study 87% of patients taking the Scutelleria baicalensis (Chinese skullcap) and Acacia catechu group reported improvements in managing symptoms from osteoarthritis (OA)!

Compared to the 88% of a group taking Naproxen of the same strength.

Bottom line:

Collagen is critical for the maintenance, optimization, and longevity of the musculoskeletal (MSK) system.

Questions? We have answers.

Every collagen product I see says that it helps joints. Are all collagen products the same for joint health?

No! This is the problem for those looking for joint specific support and why we created MSK Collagen.

First it must contain hydrolyzed, or bioactive collagen peptides, containing the right type of collagen for the job – those targeted at MSK tissue health.

In 16 human clinical trials, FORTIGEL® demonstrated positive effects for joint health among 2800 human subjects.

What are the risks or side effects of taking collagen?

If you are truly allergic to beef, chicken, fish, or shellfish you may want to steer clear as all collagen products contain some form from these animal sources.

Side effects could include mild stomach upset or indigestion when first starting the product (particularly if you have a hard time digesting protein)

If using inferior quality products you run the risk of ingesting heavy metals (mercury in particular) as it is commonly accumulated in marine sources (big fish).

I’m vegetarian. Is there a vegetarian source of collagen?

NO. There is NO VEGETARIAN SOURCE of collagen. It doesn’t exist – no matter what a company markets at you.

Scientists are working on genetically modifying things like yeast and bacteria to create an animal-free “vegan” collagen.

Others are working on ways to bioengineer a “grown in the lab” type of collagen that would be pure, safe, and effective. More research is needed to get there and then confirm it can deliver the same type of result as animal-based collagen products.

So for now, know that all collagen products are going to be based from animal sources - cows, fish, or chickens.

What depletes collagen with age?

The following have all been shown to reduce collagen quantity and quality: Smoking, alcohol consumption, high sugar consumption, high amounts of stress, excessive sun exposure, and poor sleep quality, consuming processed vegetable oils, micronutrient deficiencies (Vitamin C, zinc, copper), and poor protein digestion.
